Capcom plans $200 Xbox game | |

Game publisher Capcom announced a planned November release for "Steel Batallion," a tank combat game for Microsoft's Xbox console that will be packaged with a custom 40-button game controller and will sell for $200, the same cost as an Xbox. Most Xbox games sell for $50. | ||

| What's even worst is that the X-box fell to $140 today. So this game and the packaged control costs more than the whole X-box system. And while I agree with #4 regarding keyboards. I would love to see a photo of this special controller and what unique functions it has. I mean its a single game that NEEDS its only 40 button control. I mean it would take forever to learn how to use the stupid thing. |

That's one heck of a controller. Well, um, it looks more like the cockpit of an airplane. I think the XBOX controller with all of its buttons and joysticks was too much. Any more is just crazy.
#12 Well that really doesn't help much. I can see a control center like this for a professional simulator, but for a home video game console? You've got to be joking with me. |

Couple of things:
1. Despite the massive pricetag of the game, and the Xbox's very poor showing so far in Japan, it made number 5 on the Japanese sales chart when it came out. It'll actually probably do better over there than it will here, where the Xbox is doing great. 2. Capcom says that they're making the specs available for other gamemakers to make use of the controller in their own games. I really want this game. If I found out that Capcom or another publisher would release at least one other game able to make use of the controller at some point, that'd probably sell me on it right away. I'm going to wait for some first impressions before making the plunge, but I'm really hoping it turns out to be good. |

although this game and controller don't appeal to me... different strokes for different folks. The Japanese have some odd interests in games. For example, a fishing game sounds horrible to me... but they absolutely love it. So, when assessing this Steel Battalion game, keep that in mind.
One thing to note... its awesome to see some real innovation in this console market. For too long, gamers have had to suffer through countless iterations of "make Mario jump and gather the coins". The market has grown a bit stale, but MSFT is here to change all that. Hey jerk, you never responded to me regarding PerfectDark, Konkers, and Banjo being xbox exclusives. |

| TechTV had a review on this, while the game did look great, both graphics wise and gameplay, you HAVE to buy this 40-button controller, AND it doesn't work with anything other than that game.... so unless you are Bill Gates, it's not going to be worth it, even in the slightest bit. |

mooresa, that's because I have a life despite what some would think. I happened to slip on a PC around 2:00am, Friday, and caught your comments (but didn't get to follow your links; if you want, post 'em again, I was interested.) I lost the net connection and got distracted. ;-)
I, too, had discovered that Perfect Dark and Banjo would be retained and would have posted it... Still don't see it as a big win, and I bet Perfect Dark ends up lost in the mix--unique on GameCube, not so unique (though better done) on the XBox. And do you really think these are that big in terms of games? I bet GoldenEye made them more money than both these franchises to date. Even with the quality, I don't think Bungie and Rare make Microsoft a longstanding or successful member of the console biz. Which so far, they seem to be counting on... What I'm surprised by is the number of articles expressing dire concerns (by dire, I mean, on my scale of dire) for the XBox. Sure, there's always naysayers and doomsayers, but it looks like people are starting to close the window to MS--without a more substantial marketshare, developers are losing interest. I doubt they'll ever get out, but I think by the end of 2003, they're going to have to speak to the issue. jerk - I promise I've never asked you to "screw". Anyways... I hope you are aware that Perfect Dark 1 sold over a million copies. Thats huge.
