Intel Corp.'s mobile Pentium 4 processor has taken a step closer to its desktop sibling's speed peak, with a new 2.2GHz mobile P4 (priced at $562 in 1,000-unit quantities) supplanting the 2.0GHz version as Intel's fastest battery-friendly CPU. Like other mobile Pentium 4s, the 2.2GHz chip downshifts to 1.2GHz -- and to 1.2 instead of its usual 1.3 volts -- under Intel's SpeedStep battery-saving mode.
