Some people looking to uninstall the latest test version of Microsoft's new Windows Media Player 9 Series software may find the program is like a bad houseguest: It just won't leave. Microsoft's latest media software doesn't include a mechanism for uninstalling the software on Windows Millennium Edition (Me) or Windows XP operating system. Typically software makers like Microsoft provide a simple means of uninstalling software--particularly software such as Media Player 9 Series that has yet to be officially released. The Redmond, Wash.-based company released the public beta version last week amid much fanfare in Hollywood. Windows Me and XP users must rely on a feature called "System Restore" to roll back their Windows installation to a time before they installed Media Player 9 Series if the want to uninstall it. The clunky alternative doesn't really remove all Windows Media Player 9 Series files and could potentially wipe out other system changes. | ||

The method of uninstall is to use System Restore as recommended on WindowsMedia.com.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/player/relnotes.asp#knownissue #2 -- This hasn't been finalized, but in their settlement with the DOJ, IIRC, removal of end-user access (i.e., hiding the icons) was satisfactory. The unsettling states wanted complete removal of components, but I think the states' planned demonstration (The 67 XP Embedded CD incedent) helped to further Microsoft's stance that they couldn't allow full removal without breaking functionality of the OS and third party apps. #2, No, all they have to do is allow you to hide access to them.

| If the average end-user buys a system from an OEM that hides access in favor of a non-MS application, they won't know the MS app is available unless they look in Add/Remove Windows Components. |

| I think the MS really wanted an uninstall feature to WMP, they could easily do it. I think it is kind of dirty that they don't. It should be the users right to uninstill it if they see fit. I do understand why IE can't be uninstalled, but not this. |

| If you upgraded IE, you wouldn't be able to uninstall that. Uninstall isn't what we're looking for it is rollback. |

You can always use an older player and just download the codecs.
They have an uninstall in all supported versions except ME and XP. The method for uninstall in these OSes is System Restore. |

Make sure you post them on the beta newsgroup, so Microsoft can be aware of them.

Here's what I get in a pop-up window if I try to download the player from the MS site:
The method for removing Windows Media Player 9 Series varies, depending on which version of Windows you are running. For information about removing Windows Media Player 9 Series, see the Windows Media Player 9 Series Release Notes. (with a link to the release notes) You should always read the instructions before installing any software. I also wish they'd have included an uninstall/rollback feature, but you can't say you weren't warned. |
