WebSideStory, a firm that keeps statistics on the software that people use online, released some numbers confirming what most Web surfers who think about such things already know: Almost nobody uses the Netscape Navigator Web browser. WebSideStory reported that Netscape, the company many people credit with sparking the Internet revolution, is now forlorn in the world it helped create, claiming only 3.4 percent of the world's Web users. That's a stunning decline from just a year ago, when Netscape had a 13 percent share -- and especially from the company's heights of the mid-1990s, when virtually everyone used its browser. But now, 96 percent of the people online use Microsoft's Internet Explorer, and it's likely that Netscape will lose even more ground in the future, according to WebSideStory. "The browser war," said one of the firm's executives in its press release, "is in fact a massacre." | ||

"Netscape is right to have high hopes for the new Navigator. Version 7.0 is a fine browser; it's as stable and reliable as Internet Explorer, it renders pages just as quickly, and they all seem to work as they ought to. "
So, it finally caught up? Um, that doesn't give anyone a reason to switch back. You have to offer more than your competition does to get users to switch back to your app. |

Page 2 of this article is really interesting and misleading.
Dudes dream features - if you misspelled a URL it would autocorrect the spelling (what IE does via MSNAutosearch) - you submit your history to a search engine so it knows where to search for stuff for you (this is a rediculous request and rife with privacy concerns, further if you had already been to where you wanted to go, you'd likely not use a search engine to get there) - digital control panel integrated with email, letting you know when things change on the web or when people come online (like MSN/Windows Messenger which is customizable via .NET alerts) "You might not like Nielsen's ideas, and perhaps your dream browser would be slightly different. But the way things are going now, whatever new features you want are probably not going to come from Microsoft. " Um, these things are already available from Microsoft. |

| Since the article is entitled "Mozilla Rising" and the first few paragraphs deal with marketshare, one would logically assume that the article has something to do with Mozilla gaining in marketshare in the browser market. That would be an incorrect assumption. It's a pro Mozilla article claiming that Gecko is a platform threat to Windows. Whoever hadn't noticed that probably never noticed the browser war either. |

I've been using Mozilla for about 2 months just to see what the whole buzz was all about. I guess the only thing I like from Mozilla over Explorer is that it loads faster and the tabed browsing. Other than that, Explorer is still my first choice. I guess it's just a matter of getting used to it. The mail and news program sucks when it comes to multiple accounts though. Overall it's a very stable full featured browser.
