Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, a man so wealthy he has given away more money than many countries spend in a year, comes off as a nervous wreck when he trades the boardroom table for a bridge table. Gates began competition Saturday in the mixed pairs category at the World Bridge Championships and he doesn't seem to take the pressure of the highly intellectual game too well. Gates, playing with partner Sharon Osberg of San Francisco, rocks back and forth in his seat incessantly as he plays. His face does not show the slightest hint of anything other than extreme concentration, he hunches his back, and his hands -- unless they are busy holding his cards -- are clasped together between his legs. All the while, Gates continues his rocking. Few at the tournament, being held for the first time ever in Canada, give Gates and Osberg much of a chance to emerge from among the 470 mixed pairs teams.

It's been suggested that Bill Gates suffers from a mild form of autism.
http://www.autism-society.org/whatisautism/autism.html#whatisautism
There was an report from a professor at MIT(I believe?) who suggested that this may be very common in the tech field. People with autism tend to have difficulty with social interaction and verbal communication.

I bet he makes it to the top 10.
One of the biggest mistakes a person can make is under estimating Bill Gates.

Highly intelligent people have odd compulsions and fidget when under stress or concentrating.
Einstein had one, but I can't remember what it was.
I've known many smart people that do everything from twirl pencils to bite fingernails (very common), to manipulate quarters or coins between their fingers.

The guy who wrote this would have probably made fun of Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles for rocking back and forth when they sang. I wonder if the word "Manners" came to mind when he wrote this?

BTW, if you want more info on the bridge tournament, including standings...
http://www.bridge.gr/tourn/Montreal.02/Montreal.htm
Gates/Osberg are moving up, they were 336th and now are up to 214th position. I doubt they'll make it to the top 10. The top players have many more years of experience.

Gates is EXTREMELY COMPETITIVE, (duh!!!)...and many individuals of the same competitive nature also appear "nervous" before and during competitive activity.
Obviously the "slacker(s)" who wrote this article were non competitive stoners.

It's interesting to hear about Gates performing a "self-stimulation" like rocking. That's a clear sign he feels he's out of his element. His nervousness may pass, but may cause further episodes in later rounds. Someone keep a tab on this. I bet he doesn't advance into the top 75.

Whenever I'm doing something highly thought intensive, I chew on anything available - fingernails, pens (my favorite), even rolled up chunks of paper.
But there is a method to my madness. The act of chewing causes higher levels of blood flow to my brain, which increases the clarity of my thinking. I score, on everage, 10% higher on exams when I chew something.
(Yes, I actually did a study of myself. Over the course of my senior year in college, I examined my scores over 12 exams in various courses, all of which were of approximately the same difficulty, and recorded when I chewed and when I didn't. Scientific? Not really. Interesting? Yup! :-)

Kevin,
I'm well aware that Gates is a monster of a card player (at least with poker, but he switched to Bridge some time ago--frankly, I doubt the man could compete successfully in the professional Draw Poker tourneys), at least he is in his private life. But this is a very public event. Self Stimulation, the rocking motion he is reported to have exhibited, is a result of extreme nervousness. Everyone admits that Gates is rock hard in the board room, and can be a nightmare to negotiate with; but here he isn't in charge, he's not the CEO, he's just a player.
Therefore, he's not in his element. One could make the argument that he's scared. But I won't go that far. But it is patently clear that he's got a case of the jitters the likes of which he is unaccustomed to.

Cthulhu, um, thanks for your analysis. Duh, he's nervous. Who cares, this is such a non issue.
