Windows hack attacks on the rise | |

Just when it looked like hack attacks on Microsoft systems might be falling, new figures have been published showing the number of successfully compromised Windows boxes is actually on the rise at an alarming rate. Although the number of successful attacks on Windows machines fell broadly through the first quarter of this year, June saw an increase of five per cent in compromised systems compared to the previous month, while successful hacks in July rose by a further 12 per cent. | ||

I don't know whether this article is in fact right or wrong. That's not my call.
However, I have noticed one thing that has been very apparant. If a news story that has something detrimental about Microsoft in it is posted here on ActiveWin, that site is automatically labeled as Anti-Windows, Anti-Microsoft, or whatever. It's happened to The Register. It's happened to ZDNet. It's happened to others. And now it's happened to this site. I guess it just comes with the territory. TL |

Man why should I believe anything ActiveWin says? Activewin is very biased website. I wouldn't take them seriously... ActiveWin is anti American </sarcasm> There is nothing backing up their claim that hacks are becoming more prevalent... What sources are they citing? Who is doing this research. What methodologies are they using to get this data? |

| Was I mistaken in thinking that BSD and Solaris are flavors of Unix? Since when does Unix get a category to itself apart from BSD and Solaris? |

I'd argue that a flaw in one Unix implies a flaw in another Unix, just as much as a flaw in IIS3.0 implies one in IIS4.0 implies one in IIS5.0. If it is incorrect to say to lump all Unixes together, then all Windowses shouldn't be lumped together either. Frankly these statistics don't tell us very much at all. |

A flaw in Solaris can, may be, and very frequently is different from what may affect BSD which can, may be, and very frequently is different from what may affect other Unices. The reason these two are broken out is because they are much more distinctly their own system than other Unices like HP/UX, etc... I've never heard your bizarro IIS implication, but it's certainly different--if IIS 3 has a flaw by no means does it mean 4 and 5 do, but since they are direct descendants, generally speaking just adding new features, then that makes sense. But Solaris and BSD have substantially forked away from the original ATT Unix for sometime--development happens rather independently--what is synchronized are individual tools like gcc or apache. As for Windows, knock yourself out, break it out version wise even though in reality there are 2, but go ahead do it--it's appropriate. More people should now that Windows 95% is actually more like 5%, 5%, 15%, 40%, 30%.
And besides, doesn't the data lump Unices, Solaris, and BSD TOGETHER as "other?" A pretty standard practice that I've seen a million times before. This post was edited by sodajerk on Friday, August 16, 2002 at 21:16. |

- The Register: Refers to Microsoft as "The Beast" among other derrogatory terms. Editorializes in the middle of articles, has a ratio of something like 40/1 of MS-bashing stories to stories that are neutral to MS. Very, very rarely does it ever say anything good about MS. - ZDNet: Seems to have an editorial bias in that it will post a major news story that is bad about MS, but fail to report at all, or on the back page, a report which is bad about Linux. It's obvious that ZDNet has a Pro-Linux and Anti-MS bias. Read their stories. Sample the stories here vs the stories at ZDNet and you will see that many positive MS stories are simply not covered at all, or poorly by ZDNet. - VUNet: Dunno, can't comment, though it seems they have a similar editorial bias to ZDNet's. This is yellow journalism. These zines put a negative spin on everything MS does. It's similar to the liberal mainstream media which puts a liberal slant on just about every story. Do a test for yourself. Over a period of a couple months, see how many times in, say, the NYTimes, or the Wash. Post, they say the words "right-wing" or "right-wing extremists" vs "left-wing" or even "liberal". Left-wing and liberal are almost non-existant words in the liberal press. Words like "Watchdog" or "Environmentalist" replace them to put a positive spin on liberal left-wing extremism, where there is no such veil on right-wing extremism. |

"successfully compromised Windows boxes"
About the only ones I know that call computers, "boxes" are anti-Microsoft Linux folk. Boxes are about .78 cents to 3.50 while Computers are several hundred to serveral thousand dollars. Please stop calling my several thousand dollar investment a box, ok? |
