Dell unhooks Windows from desktops | |

Dell Computer is making Windows optional for some of its business desktops. The PC maker next month will introduce n-Series corporate desktop and workstations that ship without Microsoft's Windows, or any other operating system, pre-installed. The new desktops appear to be a slick interpretation of Microsoft's new licensing terms and a way to navigate customer demand for PCs without an OS installed. The Microsoft licensing terms, which were put in place on Aug. 1, specify that PC makers must ship PCs with an operating system. The new policy exists to prevent piracy and to better track OS shipments. | ||

I thought that Microsoft had been banned by earlier legal action from forcing Manufacturers to include Windows on their computers?
TL P.S. The PopUps are DEFINITELY out of control. I've been here all of 30 seconds and my task-bar is smooshed all the way to the right, filled up with ad windows. It's starting to look like a pr0n site around here. |

I don't know what's "wrong" with my viewing of ActiveWin, but I never rarely if ever see the popups (IE 6.0). Is it my use of the Back and Forward buttons that is helping me out?
N-series PCs will cost the same as PCs that ship with Windows, a Dell representative said. If the price was different by $100 or so, this would be great news. Since that's not the case, this isn't so exciting. |

Just got one. Will install shortly. To the ActiveWin webmasters who have decided to go overboard with the popups... See what you've done now ? I never used to use these utilities because I didn't mind one popup per site, like it used to be here. Now, you've ruined that. You went to far. And I will see NONE of the Ad's now. Think about that. |

I read the damned article :) I know they are shipping FreeDos. That was not my question! My question was simple. Several years ago, was there, or was there not a consent decree that Microsoft agree'd to that indicated they would not be allowed to force OEM's to ship computers with Windows. Nothing more, nothing less. Sheesh :) TL |

| More than likely, AW gets paid for having the javascript on their pages. Whether you block the ad or not, more than likely, AW will still get paid. If they use the pay per display model rather than the pay per click (where AW gets paid only if viewers click on the ad), it won't affect them if you block the ads. TL and any other whiners, if you don't like it, then pay for it. I'm sure Bob Stein would gladly take your $1000/mo check to pay for AW upkeep and get rid of all pop-ups and pop-unders. The short answer is, you get what you pay for. |

I downloaded CookieCop 2 from PC Magazine. It's one of those PCMag in-house utilities, and they typically do a damned fine job on them. It's also free.
So far, it seems to work well. Easier than I thought it would be. I've never bothered to used anything like this until today. TL |
