Perhaps Gates learned his lesson from the antitrust trial, realizing that it is better to admit when a mistake is made than to risk coming across like an automaton whose only settings are "Destroy" and "Gloat." I have often been critical of Microsoft, denouncing the company's aggressive tactics at length while following its antitrust trial like a bystander watching a slow-motion train wreck. But with the latest announcement that Microsoft bungled when trying to pitch .NET to consumers, I find myself in the curious position of saying for the first time: Nicely done, Mr. Gates. | ||

One of the secrets to Microsoft's success has always been their ready willingness to admit when they make a mistake and then change their strategy, or product, or whatever.
Of course I'm not talking the antitrust trial, I'm talking product line mistakes. :) |

Maybe MS had a plan from the start of the untitrust trial. What if they knew that Jackson would over reach and be slapped down by the higher courts. This could explain why the MS acted so incompetent during the first trial. They screwed up computer demonstrations, their lawyers were out performed in court and I have never seen Gates acting like that under any kind of questioning. Especially when he knew that the tape would eventually go to the media.
Or maybe it was just dumb luck and they are starting to learn from it. |

I don't think that Microsoft has fowled up the marketing for .Net or the .Net platform at all.
Microsoft marketed the dotNet "platform" to the media, which essentially meant that the media spent 2 years complaining about web services and .Net My Services. WHICH ARE ONLY 2 MINOR OUTLYING FEATURES of the .Net Framework. I think Microsoft knew that this bait would dupe the morons. While in reality what they were really marketing, to developers, was the .Net Framework and the kick-ass platform that Windows has become as a result of it. Which also includes the ability to easily leverage Web Services. So, they effectively baited the media (and some competitors) into thinking that .net was about something else, and confused a few people along the way. But, .Net has hardly proven to be a failure. I think that Gates admitting some failures in marketing is just dupe #2 ... |

GhostRider - A lot of it was just dumb luck, or bad lawyers. The lawyers opposing Microsoft manipulated some of the arguments fairly well, and showed pieces of the video tape out of context, etc. Them Judge Jackson didn't allow Microsoft to respond to them.
It was ultimately Jackson's decision to not allow Microsoft to have their say in court which resulted in his rulings being slapped down. This type of bias didn't occur in the appeals court trial. IronCladLou - I think that is part of the point, though. By confusing the developer initiative with the consumer initiatives in using the same .Net name, they ended up with a poor marketing tactic. They should have left .Net to just the developer initiative, and then let that movement create the consumer initiatives. |

| Ceazar - Unfortunately I am highly skeptical of any anti-Microsoft news published by slashdot. They're pretty much 0 for 100 in terms of accuracy, so until this has been confirmed by two other third parties, it's most likely not true. |
