Microsoft's mobile quandary | |

Robin Bloor, founder and leading light at Bloor Research, argues that mobile computing will dominate the industry, which could leave Microsoft out in the cold. It is pretty clear to everyone now that the world of mobile computing will eventually eat the PC world and spit out the pips. But what nobody is really sure of is when or exactly how it will happen. Mobile will dominate for obvious reasons: it is all about wires - or the lack of them. Not having to physically plug into a communications network is good. Not having to plug into a power source is also good. And this, of course, is almost as good for PC laptops as it is for personal digital assistants (PDAs) and mobile phones. | ||

| And why would this leave Microsoft "out in the cold"? Unless I'm mistaken, Microsoft probably has more wireless and mobile projects and research going on than any other company out there. Clearly MS is not planning on putting a 1 GB version of XP on their mobile devices as it seems this guy is forseeing. They do have a strategy, and I'm sure they plan to use it. |

It must be tough, to wake up each day... hating Microsoft... and then going to bed each night utterly defeated. Linux sales down from last year. Palm bleeding market share. Apple reduced to selling crane-necked designer computers. Microsoft reporting 20% increase in R&D. AOL falling over themselves. Antitrust case being settled. Oracle licensing scandel. XP sales roaring to record highs. Sun losing focus and being choked out of existence.
Tough year to be a hater. |
