IBM and Linux combined represent a threat and inspiration as Microsoft Corp drives into enterprise computing, top company executives said yesterday. Computing giant IBM wages war against Microsoft in lucrative corporate accounts while Linux, the low-cost threat to Windows, wins supporters in fertile developer communities. Speaking at Microsoft's 2002 Financial Analysts Day yesterday, executives heading-up Microsoft's developer and enterprise server divisions spoke with frankness. They also revealed product and strategic initiatives to combat the double-headed threat. Eric Rudder, senior vice president developer and platform evangelism, set the tone. "IBM is our greatest competitor. In the way they sell products and compete in corporate accounts," he said. | ||

Microsoft is its own biggest threat. It is a company that has grown far out of touch with its customers. MS continues to suck up our money while continuing to provide products that fall short - occasionally far short - of their reported claims. Just check the millions of postings about Windows XP problems on MS's newsgroups to see that their "most reliable version of Windows ever" is a pathetic mempry hogging piece of crap. Linux wouldn't be seen as a threat to MS if MS provided exactly what they claim they do, instead of bugware.
I own a small OEM PC business. I only use genuine MS Windows. When small business's like mine, and there are tens of thousands of "white box" PC business's, see that Linux has become easier to install and maintain than Windows, the threat will have become real. We will convert in droves. For now, the PC OS and Office Suite markets are MS's to lose. Shape up MS or we won't ship your products out. |

sodablue: how can this be true? If as you say open source software is of inferior quality, and doesn't have quality develper tools, how can this be true? How can something of inferior quality be such a big threat? This post was edited by tgnb on Monday, July 29, 2002 at 11:04. |

Give Mandrake 9.0 Beta 1 a look see. I was pleasantly surprised to see that a Visioneer USB scanner, and a Creative Labs WebCam 3 were both seen and recognized in this new version.
And with the newest Kernel supporting USB 2.0, ... It won't be long until hardware support in Linux is no longer an issue. The thing I am waiting to see is programs that are easier to configure in Linux. The program XAWTV is cool when you first use it, as it automates finding the channels. But if you make a mistake, and choose PAL instead of NTSC, or choose Antennae instead of Cable.... There is no way to go back and run this autoconfig program. <sigh> But all in all, Linux is on the move. |

bob: Perhaps you need someone to help you think for a second.
Microsoft has literally millions upon millions of users. What percentage of these millions upon millions of users are having real issues? How much of these issues have anything to do with the OS itself, rather than 3rd party products, such as buggy drivers, other buggy software, etc... Microsoft simply can not test every piece of software, every driver, every service, etc... However, Microsoft has done a lot to help prevent such things, like, if you try to install Windows2000 Creative SB Live! Drivers, it actually comes up and says "This software has known issues that causes system instability, and should not be used", or such things as that. There is also the Windows Online Crash Analysis website, where if it is an actual Windows component that causes the crash, when the system comes back up, it brings you to that website to put in information like what you were doing when this happened, what apps were open, etc... and then will get back to you on weather or not it is a known issue and has been fixed, a new issue that is being looked at, etc... But I'm sure you are just in here to bash MS, if so, go away, no need for mindless, trolling, drones here. |
