Things just aren't moving fast enough for the folks at Microsoft. In this case, what they're looking to speed up are the connections between people using all sorts of Microsoft products and the Internet. Chairman Bill Gates has even publicly lamented the sorry state of high-speed Net links in the U.S. "Clearly, if you can get [broadband prices] down to $20, $25 a month [in the next 18 months], something then will happen.... But, you know, in the U.S. it's not clear that will happen," he said in April at the Government Leaders' Conference in Seattle. <%=GetPoll(46)%> | ||

| Well there are worst offers: in Italy you pay €39.95 a month, to get "up to" 256Kb downloading and "up to" 125Kb uploading. not only but you have to sign for one year contract. Don' t get me wrong, 256Kb could be enough because most of the time between busy servers and other problems higher downloading speeds are not so common but the problem is the word "up to". What Phone companies should guarantee is a "minimum speed" and not the opposite! |

It's difficult in the US to roll out broadband because the technology is a wire one. Since we have such a large land mass, and most of the existing wires are too old to support broadband, it's quite a high cost and labor intensive to replace the existing wires with new ones.
24 UKP is about US$40... Which is what I pay for my 1Mbps DSL line. I happen to be lucky and live only 4 blocks away from the telephone CO. |

| I pay $29.95 for a 1.5+Mbs cable connection + $10 for the modem a month in the US. I have to buy a modem one of these days to get that $10 a month back... |

As I see it, the REAL problem with Broadband roll-out in the US is the Telco's and Cable Companies. Especially the Telco's.
The don't want to provide BroadBand (DSL) unless they get some government regulations that legally allow them to keep it all to themselves as a Monopoly. I'm not even saying this is wrong. I'm just saying that Broadband is being held hostage by these people, and that's the real problem. TL |

You're lucky... In FFX VA, Cox Cable charges us $35 a month for the service, PLUS $15 a month for the Modem. They upped the price after converting us from RoadRunner to the private Cox network. And it's been problematic every since :( -TL |

| donpacman - Before I got DSL I was paying $25 for my second phone line and $25/month for an ISP. So for the same, if not less money I get 1Mbps always on connection. |

| Two Words. Aldephia Sucks. I feel they are secrety pumping out pop-up ads over the connection as well. It is kind of strange to get one of those ads while browsing the IRS website. Anyone else have problems with this? |

| #12, I have a local cable company that has some money and wanted to undercut the DSL by a crapload. The cable company is owned by Susquehanna Pfaltzgraff, yes the plate people. They own half the city of York, PA, which is also where they started and still reside. They have a few cable companies, a whole bunch of radio stations, the plates, telephone and half the downtown in rental buildings, so they can afford to have the cheaper rates. Not to shabby either, they have dual DS-3's for there connection and I get 2.4 during offpeak and 1.8 during peak. Not to bad for $29 a month. |
