RealNetworks on Monday will unveil a new open source version of its streaming media software that supports multiple file formats for audio and video, including those that use Microsoft's Windows Media technology. The new software package, dubbed "Helix," and first reported by The New York Times, is scheduled to be unveiled at a press conference at 10 a.m. PDT. The software includes tools such as Helix Universal Server and Helix Producer. | ||

Open source and support for Windows Media / ASF format ???
And no help of Microsoft. So does this mean that they reengineerd the protocol and made the code open source. Makes me wonder if Microsoft will sue RealNetworks fast. |

omg are you saying I can now watch my .wmf and .asf porn files under linux? dam maybe this is just what I needed to switch.. cause you know I can live without the games.. but not the porn collection..

| I read that the source is only available for the non-Realplayer formats... i.e. they aren't giving up any information on the stuff they control, just their competitors. |

from the article "In addition to its own new product, Real has promised to give away source code to much of the underlying technology for streaming media. That stops short of the actual file format, or "codec" itself, but will provide the open-source community and other companies with powerful new tools to build their own streaming media players or software.
Glaser said he wouldn't initially make the software code that mimics Microsoft's streaming available but that he was considering the idea. A first chunk of code underlying the RealNetworks multimedia player software will be released in 90 days. Other code, including the basic functions of its streaming media server and encoder, will be released by the end of the year, the company said. " There seems to be no statement as to what parts of the code will be opened. License info also didn't seem to be mentioned. When they say things like "basic functions" will be released, it makes me think this is a token effort to make open source people cheer. We'll see soon whether the company can put its money where its mouth is and release its IP. |
