Neb Okla: The fine print.. yes yes yes I know the fine print. I was merely being sarcastic about the 5 nines. But i wouldnt use the fine print in anyone's defense.
I'm sorry but most of the hotfixes are patches, and unless you administer servers you might not know that most if not all of them DO require a reboot. Give me an example of some of these hotfixes that dont require a reboot, what percentage of fixes do they account for?
I said "YET ANOTHER hotfix" not becasue i dont expect any hotfixes. But the sheer number of them warrants the statement. I agree no OS is perfect or ever will be, however there are several other Server OS's that don't require a reboot when hotfixes come out. Those OS stay up unless you have to patch the kernel and that is very rare. On those os's you can even completely upgrade such things as the web services and mail services etc etc without ever needing a reboot. For example the recent security update for SSH and apache didnt require a reboot of the server they were installed on. An admin did not have to bring the server down. Furthermore SSH could be installed AND tested all while the older version was still running. So the downtime would be minimal.
Don't get me wrong. I use Windows all the time and there are many great things about it. However the need to reboot for patches, hotfixes and upgrades is one of the weaknesses in the OS.
These are only a few of the hotfixes/patches that require a reboot:
