The long-awaited video game console upgrades from Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp. this month will set both companies up well for the holiday shopping season, as they lock into their own “Modern Warfare” battle for video game leadership.
Sony’s PlayStation 4 went on sale last Friday and the company said it has sold more than 1 million consoles since then, fueling a spike in Sony’s shares on Monday. Microsoft is set to launch its new Xbox, the Xbox One on Nov. 22, the Friday before Thanksgiving, in light of the shorter official holiday shopping season, which typically starts on “Black Friday” in the U.S. Microsoft is also doing some evening launches, such as a 10 p.m. rollout on November 21 at its store in San Francisco.
