The narrative he writes is not exactly a rags-to-riches tale, but Allen's vision to devise profitable commercial computer software with Gates seems at odds with reality during a cold winter: "I was three semesters shy of graduation at Washington State University, where I'd taken two breaks in the last two years. I had a dead-end job at Honeywell, a crummy apartment, and a '64 Chrysler New Yorker that was burning oil.
