New figures from a market-research firm further indicate that the desktop computer is ceding ground to tablet computers, news that may put renewed pressure on Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) to improve its product line.
On Tuesday, Forrester Research Inc. (FORR) predicted in a report that desktop-computer sales will decline to 18.2 million in 2015, down from 20.5 million units sold in 2010, while tablet sales will more than quadruple to 44 million in 2015, up from 10.3 million last year.
By 2015, Forrester predicted, a third of all online consumers in U.S. will be using one of the thin, touchscreen-controlled computers known as tablets.
