In an effort to patch a bug in one of last month's security updates, Microsoft has issued a Hotfix(MS06-049) which should repair the problem with only one minor caveat: it can ruin data on drives formatted with the NTFS file system.
The catch is not as bad as it initially sounds, though. In order for the "fix" to corrupt data, the PC must be running Windows 2000 SP4 with NTFS compression enabled on individual folders that contain files larger than 4 kilobytes. The files must also have been either created or updated in that specific folder. The MS06-049 Knowledge Base article has been updated with a description of the problem.
