Microsoft has been slowly phasing out their Windows 98, Windows 98se and Windows ME support. In 2004, Microsoft limited security updates to only critical issues. Now they are taking the next step, completely dropping support for the Win9x operating systems. This new change will take effect on July 12th officially, making July 11th the last day you can get support from Microsoft for those operating systems.
This means that there will be no more new security updates offered from the company's website after that date. Computers being used for non-Internet related purposes are not threatened by this but computers that regularly access the internet would be considerably more vulnerable to various security flaws that will no longer be fixed by Microsoft updates.
