Common Misconception
Since Apple announced their new iMac Core Duo and MacBook Pro yesterday at Macworld, speculation has run wild about these Macs' potential ability to boot Windows XP. We'd like to clarify the facts about the situation:
At this stage, simply put, you cannot boot Windows XP on the new iMac or MacBook Pro. The first issue that must be taken into consideration is that unlike nearly all ordinary PC hardware, Apple's new Intel-based Macs use EFI, or Extensible Firmware Interface. Most PCs use BIOS, or Basic Input/Output System, and it's also what Apple's Developer Transition Kits used. EFI, like BIOS, was designed by Intel, and it's destined to become the successor to the aging BIOS technology, which was first introduced in 1981 with the original IBM PC.
