Microsoft has begun a public beta trial of its Microsoft Update service for distributing security patches.
Microsoft Update is a substitute for Windows Update, and not only protects the Windows operating system, but also Microsoft Office, Exchange, SQL Server and other company products.
The new service is being trialled by around 25,000 users and the commercial service is expected by the middle of the year.
Each group of users will have their own interface to access a single update centre, which will store updates for different Microsoft operating systems and main products.
