After breaking the news to employees earlier this month that Groove Networks would be acquired, founder Ray Ozzie presented a gift to his new Microsoft Corp. colleague Jeff Raikes. Ozzie handed Raikes, part-owner of the Seattle Mariners who was visiting Groove's offices, a stack of Red Sox caps.
It was Ozzie's way of welcoming Microsoft to Massachusetts. Ozzie, 49, best known as the creator of Lotus Notes, is among the most acclaimed software developers of his generation. As part of the Groove deal, he will become a Microsoft chief technical officer. And he is hoping the Redmond, Wash., software goliath will put down roots here.
''I've got my foot in the door," Ozzie said in an interview last week. ''I'm certainly going to advocate using this as a foothold to take advantage of a very talented labor pool in the Boston area."
