Surfing
arguably spawned the skateboarding craze in the late 1950s and 1960s -- hence
pretty crappy songs like the Beach Boys' "Sidewalk Surfing" -- so it is almost
ironic or perhaps maybe poetic justice that the skateboarding video game craze
would spawn competition in the form of surfing based titles. Thus far about the
only realistic element in surfing games has been that there is water and there
are boards, but that could change with Angel Studios' upcoming TransWorld
Surf for the Xbox. Where Tony Hawk has almost single handily
redefined the action sports genre with skateboarding, TransWorld Surf is
set to change the way we think of hitting the waves and hanging ten. While most
of us will probably remain convinced that surf music is pretty lame, this game
already manages to bring so much of the beach into our living rooms that the
only thing missing is the smell of the sea air and the sand in our ears.
