ExtremeMhz.com has posted the first review of Lite-On's new dual layer DVD recordable drive, the SOHW-832S. Capable of writing at 8x on DVD+R and DVD-R media, 4x on DVD+RW and DVD-RW media, and 2.4x on DVD+R9 (dual layer) media, the drive also can write to CD-R media at 40x and CD-RW at 24x. So how does this early release perform? Here's a snippet from the review:
I couldn't be happier with the dual layer results. Based on all I've read regarding this new technology, I went into it expecting the worst but was completely impressed with the results. Nero Burning ROM handled these new discs exceptionally well and I had no issues writing to the media. I was quite excited to find that the discs played back without any problems on all the standalone players I tested it on. As far as PC drive compatibility, the test movie played back flawlessly on my older Pioneer DVD-116 DVD-ROM drive. Considering the disc could not play on one of the PC drives, it is too early to tell whether or not there is a compatibility issue with the new format. Based on my results, I honestly don't think there is. The only thing that does concern me is the suggested retail price of the media itself. Dual Layer discs cost approximately 40 cents more to produce and I've read that their price tag is going to be quite high.
