The franchise de force in racing games has been Sony’s Gran Turismo series, reinforced with the release of Gran Turismo 3 A-spec in 2001. With over 150 cars, excellent controls and decent graphics, GT3 appeared to have little competition in the early part of 2001 until Project Gotham Racing was released a few months later as a launch title for the Xbox. People in the know, such as the gaming press and Xbox loyalists, had a feeling that the Xbox’s graphic capabilities could really push what GT3 had visually, but weren’t sure if PGR would measure up in the gameplay department.
