Microsoft will next month begin beta testing its new patch installer, which promises automatic updates for a number of products. The technology is designed to simplify the patch management process - welcome news in light of problems caused by last week's Blaster worm that exploits a flaw in Windows systems. Microsoft Installer 3.0 is a unified update tool for several products, including Office, Excel and SQL Server. It will be followed by an installer for versions of Windows.
