In a sign of further consolidation and increased competition in the semiconductor market, UMC, Taiwan's second biggest foundry, said it will pay Infineon around $120 million to buy the German firm's stake in a joint venture.
Back in 2000 both had committed to build a 12-inch silicon wafer fabrication plant in Singapore, but it seems Infineon has other irons in the fire.
The shifting alliances between semiconductor firms have Infineon tied up with Nanya, AMD with IBM Microelectronics – although it was tied up with UMC.
