To follow up the recent story in this column (Biz Buzz, July 7, 2003) about crackers who've discovered a possible exploit for the Xbox that would enable users to load Linux as a resident operating system without hardware modification -- as well as pirate Xbox software -- it appears that the cat has indeed been let out of the bag. In fact, the "full disclosure" of the exploit took place on a message board on July 4, which the poster stated as "the day of the Xbox Independence." Though I haven't had a chance to go through the whole document, which is posted here, it focuses on the vulnerability of the Xbox Dashboard, because it apparently doesn't rely on the same security aspects as when a game or DVD movie are put in the CD tray.
