For those who haven't noticed, the reason Microsoft got into the game console business was to "pull a Sony," meaning it intended to take over the console scene and trivialize the competition. The company believed that by using less exotic but state-of-the-art PC parts, along with an online strategy and sheer muscle, it could turn the Microsoft Xbox into the dominant console.
