Microsoft has added an unexpected extra beta release to its Office 2003 schedule, leading some company watchers to predict that Redmond will ship its desktop office suite later than expected.
Company officials had said publicly that they expected the product to be released to manufacturing in June and ship this summer.
Beta 2, which Microsoft began distributing to 600,000 customers starting in March, was supposed to be the final Office 2003 beta. But now Microsoft is planning to refresh its second beta some time "later this spring." The company won't say how much of a delay this will create, and is holding to its claim that the product will ship later this summer.
