After promoting the XML file formats for Office 2003 as THE new feature, Microsoft has surprised a lot of people by announcing it will only be included in the top two versions of the software. Beta testers have been using the new file formats for months, and users finally saw a way to break from the closed file formats usually offered by MS Office. Now users will have to spend extra money to get the Professional version in order to use the XML features. (The top-end Enterprise version, which also has the feature, will only be available through Microsoft's volume licensing program.)
