For several years now I have thought longingly about Linux, the power-to-the-people operating system that is said to be as stable as a rock, open and free and the embodiment of everything good in the world - in short, the exact opposite of Microsoft's Windows, both technically and politically. But I also know that Linux, for all its reputed strengths, is not a consumer product. It is very hard for the average person to successfully install and get running. Before attempting to install it, anyone who doesn't have at least an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering should consider the warning of Dante at the gates of hell: "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here."
