The cut-throat battle between Microsoft's Xbox games machine and Sony's PlayStation 2 has put Microsoft's Home and Entertainment division $US348 million ($600 million) in the red.
The loss for the last three months of 2002 was double that of a year earlier, when the Xbox games console was still new. The machine was launched in Australia in March last year.
Microsoft has reported strong Xbox sales - but is estimated to lose $US100 on every box. So as sales climbed, so did the loss.
