The question now in the Microsoft case is: Has the United States given up? The Justice Department denies its decision not to pursue a breakup of the software colossus indicates capitulation. But a lot of people think it waved the white flag, indeed, that the case should never have been filed. But it was filed, and unnamed Justice Department officials are issuing tough, albeit anonymous talk: "Is this something we view as going soft on Microsoft? Absolutely not," one senior official in the Justice Department's antitrust division told the Washington Post.
