The product: The ClearPlay DVD player
The price: Under $100; due this fall
The purpose: To excise potentially offensive parts and turn home videos into family-friendly features
The contentious battle over whether anyone besides the original filmmakers have the right to bleep out four-letter words and eliminate violence and nudity in movies probably will heat up again. Utah company ClearPlay will demonstrate a prototype DVD player capable of automatically muting or skipping certain scenes. "If I'm sitting around with my kids, we're all a lot more comfortable if we don't hear an F-word or see frontal nudity," CEO Bill Aho says.
Because most movie fans prefer watching on their TV sets, ClearPlay hopes a stand-alone DVD player will help spread its technology. Ultimately, ClearPlay's technology "can be on game boxes, video on demand, satellite, cable TV, virtually anyplace you watch movies," Aho says.
