If you spend any time on the Internet you've probably received an e-mail from Proxyconn or seen one of its banner ads.
The ads claim the service can offer subscribers connections to the Internet at speeds that nearly match those provided by pricey DSL service now being offered by telephone companies and others.
The Proxyconn service costs about $9 per month. You download a piece of software, install it, and then you're off speeding down the information superhighway at breakneck speeds — the same ordinary dial-up modem and ordinary telephone line as before.
That's the theory. And if you're a road warrior or a cost-conscious consumer, the Proxyconn service might seem like nirvana.
But can you get a high-speed Internet Web browsing without the added expense of so-called broadband connections? Here's the reality.
