Bell Labs, the research arm of Lucent Technologies unveiled new chips that promise to deliver eye-popping Internet connection speeds over next-generation wireless networks. The new processors have applications for cell phones and other mobile devices.
The two prototype chips are based on Bell Labs' Layered Space-Time (BLAST) wireless network technology and are used in combination with multiple antennas both at the base station and on the receiving mobile device.
In testing, the BLAST technology has reportedly delivered data reception at 19.2 megabits per second (Mbps) on a third-generation (3G) network. In comparison, today's fastest 3G networks operate at peak speeds of 2.4 to 3 Mbps.
