Connectix is shipping a software emulator that will let companies install and then run a number of different operating systems on one PC, without rebooting. The software could have benefits for companies that use a variety of systems, or are considering upgrading operating systems.
Virtual PC lets machines running Windows 2000, Windows NT or Windows Me host and run up to 32 different Intel-based operating systems concurrently. The list includes Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows 95, Windows NT, Linux and MS-DOS. While Windows Me programs will run under Windows 2000, for example, there are often unforeseen compatibility problems. Virtual PC is designed to avoid these, and also make it possible for a Windows 2000 program to run under Windows Me.
