There must be something about the inherent nature of bureaucrats that makes them want to tangle people up with rules and regulations. Used to creating obstacles and restrictions for nearly every facet of life, state and municipal governments around the country have over the last year or so decided that they need to legislate how you use your mobile telephone.
In several states and cities you can get a ticket for talking on a mobile phone while driving. For a few months it seemed that every newspaper in America had run a feature with the headline "Driven To Distraction" about how driving while talking can be a recipe for car accidents. It's a dubious claim and the final judgement of science on the matter has yet to be written. Yet lawmakers are speaking with one voice--and it seems Americans are generally inclined to agree with them. So far only seven states have not addressed the issue with proposed legislation. Yet there are few if any laws banning driving while eating, which can be just as distracting.
