Perhaps Gates learned his lesson from the antitrust trial, realizing that it is better to admit when a mistake is made than to risk coming across like an automaton whose only settings are "Destroy" and "Gloat." I have often been critical of Microsoft, denouncing the company's aggressive tactics at length while following its antitrust trial like a bystander watching a slow-motion train wreck. But with the latest announcement that Microsoft bungled when trying to pitch .NET to consumers, I find myself in the curious position of saying for the first time: Nicely done, Mr. Gates.
