Advanced Micro Devices is headed toward a chip-manufacturing deal with United Microelectronics, expected to be announced Thursday, according to sources familiar with the agreement.
The PC chipmaker and the Taiwanese chip foundry have scheduled a conference call for Thursday afternoon. During the call, the companies are likely to say that UMC will manufacture PC processors for AMD, the sources said.
The companies could also announce a much more extensive relationship, including a joint-manufacturing agreement, the sources said. Under such an agreement, the companies would split the cost of a new manufacturing facility, known as a fab, or possibly add on to an existing AMD facility.
