Software giant Microsoft Corp. MSFT.O said on Wednesday it would pour more resources into its efforts to carve out a position in the $10 billion video game market rather than cutting its losses and exiting from the venture. Microsoft's Chief Financial Officer John Connors, when asked if the world's number one software maker had an "exit strategy" for the year-old Xbox video game machine, said in a Web cast: "The fallback position is probably to double down and make it successful." | ||

Actually it is a moot point, but I guess that is a moot point, since I understood what you meant.
Anyway, the point, macro, is that when you stoop to personal attacks (as you have) then attack someone for using personal attacks, you become a hypocrite. If you want your condemnation of jerk to have any meaning, you need to stop your personal attacks on him. As for conceding, well, to be quite honest, the picture I have of you right now is a mad dog frothing at the mouth. That wasn't meant to be an attack. What I mean by that is, you sound like a raving lunatic who is more conerned with hearing "You're right" than you are in whatever you are arguing about (which everybody else has long ago forgotten). |

| BobSmith, you don't seem to know anything about the console market, because your posts have been dead wrong. Go figure out the difference between SOLD and SHIPPED and then get back to us. You claimed 8 or 9 million PS2 sold in Japan this year, when the current number is really 3,167,900 -- and yes, the Japanese numbers are very accurate compared to other regions. Your 8 or 9 million number is the number that have SHIPPED. It's annoying to see you demanding concessions from other people when you seem to be trying to speak about an industry you don't have a clue about. |

Read my post - #87. I quoted a Sony press release. I quoted it exactly. I provided a link. If I used the words "sold" or "shipped", it was in reference to the press release which was being quoted. Why don't you tell Sony it does't know the difference between sold and shipped.
Also, I provided numbers, figures, and statements. I also provides links to all of my statements. I made no claims of myself. I never claimed to know anything about the industry. I just claimed to be able to use Google to find articles from people that do know about the industry. You have attacked me, yet you have provided no evidence. Frankly, I don't care how much of which system has sold or shipped or been installed in which places. I never said I did. I never said I understood it. (I also never said I didn't.). You haven't provided any evidence for your claims. Why the heck are you even bothering to post, stu. Rather than attack me, if you see that I am ignorant of some marketting idea, why don't you educate me? Why don't you provide evidence of your claims? Show me where Sony has stated sales (not shipments) that support your statements. Show me marketting dictionaries that support you definitions. Without evidence your claims are meaningless. |

JWM: Well, you can get FAR better graphics on the X-Box than on a PC, and here is why.
When developing for a console, you can take full advantage of the hardware, you know what is going to be in it, and you know what every single X-Box is capable of. Now, when developing for a PC, you have to develop for the lowest common denominator. They can't take full advantage of even a Geforce 3 today (X-Box is faster than a Geforce 3 graphics) on PCs because of this simple fact. So in reality, it doesn't matter if your PC is 2x, or even 10x, as fast as the X-Box, you aren't going to be able to get better looking games on it until the bottom line of PC's are better than the X-Box. |

Sorry BobSmith, but stu_forums is right. Its all a matter of SHIPPED versus SOLD. All the console makers use this little trick. But you've been taken by it, obviously.

And by the way, Bob's numbers are for Japan/Asia. Not the solo country of Japan. Why neglect a whole region? As for the difference between sold and shipped, I've never seen any of you quibble when it comes to Microsoft.
The whole discussion can said to be concerned with two things: financial success of the console, and userbase. Financial success should specifically work with these numbers as the Sales are realized by the manufacturer. As for userbase, I can't imagine it lagging anymore than a million (worldwide) to the 40+ million number that we can trust. So if sold is 40+ million and userbase is 39+ million--how have you discredited the numbers or assertion that that kicks the pa-tooty out of 5 million with a userbase of 4.5 million? |

JWM: Yes, that's EXACTLY what I'm saying.
I can run UT2003 on my Athlon 900 w/ a GF2MX 400 somewhat decently. However, I don't really think of UT2003 as a beautiful looking game. The graphics aren't realistic, they are more cartoonish (not knocking it, they just weren't going for realistic looking graphics). Realistic graphics would be Splinter Cell, Battlefield 1942, and Doom3. All these games could be written to look better on the X-Box simply because it's a more powerful system than the current lowest common denomitor. BTW, it may have a 700mhz CPU, but the CPU isn't what's used much in gaming, it's the GPU, which is inbetween the Geforce 3 and the Geforce 4 in terms of quality and performance. |

macross, again, with the stupidity--I don't give a crap about one country or the other... I want to know the TOTAL success of the product. If MS has failed to introduce the product in countries that Sony is in, that's their execution problem and reflects on how well they are executing. This is exactly what I want to know. I don't want to know: they are doing decent here, and not so bad there, and lousy here but that's all that matters because that's as far as MS has gotten or will ever get--so Sony's success across the board across the world is irrelevant because I want to give MS any possible adavantage.
And now you are back to the bullsh!t, next generation starts at zero argument? Give that up! You are talking about a 3rd gen console that still used cartridges, right? How does that compare--oh, it doesn't. And who has all the software titles right NOW? Who is likely to keep them? And Jesus, MS never gives shipped not sold numbers? You're F'in smokin crack! Seriously. All they ever give is OEM total numbers, they hate to give the retail numbers but sometimes those slip out. So you still can't accept that in the first year Sony only sold 10 mil, and in the same time frame that MS sold 5, Sony has sold around 35 million, huh? Pathetic, pathetic, pathetic. If you don't get it, macross, and I'm sure you don't, I find you uninteresting, boring, and idiotic. I am not making claims on behalf of PS2 or GC--I'm saying the XBox is pathetic and wonder what they are going to do about it. All you have said is next time, it'll be like going back to zero. You haven't explained how MS is now going to get software deals they can't get now, how they are going to ship to countries that they can't get to after a year, how they are going to get consumers interested in buying it, etc..
All I have been doing is attacking your position. And is pathetic and humorous how wrapped up you are in it. You haven't said anything new, you keep saying the same stupid crap that we were laughing at you for 24 hours ago. |

I'm sure quite a few people got a laugh or two at your expense, foo.
I'm not predicting the next generation on historical trends--I'm basing them on the current factors. Your lame historical analysis does nothing to look at the trends at the time, the particular strengths and weaknesses of each product. If you were to look at strengths and weakness now, Sony has many, many more than anyone else. If you consider losing 175 million never mind the billion + that's not apparent because it's in the R&D budget and the hundreds of millions that isn't noted because it's in the marketing budget a success. Good for you. I just am concerned about the success and viability of a product's profitability. Good for you if you think they are the best--I'm talking about the 50 million who don't think so. I'm happy that you're happy that MS's greatest strength is the ability to throw away millions of dollar. I find it pathetic, but I'm happy for you. Happy? |

Yes, you can turn the details up and down and such, however, it's still not going to be as good as what the X-Box can do, as X-Box games are written specifically for the hardware in the X-Box, which never changes. PC games are written for general PC's, not really tweaked as well as it could be, etc, besides the fact that they have to cut cornors and such to support the lower end systems. I'm not sayin that consoles are better, or that PCs suck for gaming. I'm saying that consoles have an advantage when it comes to making better looking games. |
