Age ratings on videogames are set to be unified across Europe with the introduction of a new ratings system next spring by the Interactive Software Federation of Europe. The new five-category system will replace the current ratings, which are operated by ELSPA and the VSC in the UK.
According to the IFSE, the new system is the first one to be designed to handle the varying cultures and attitudes across Europe, and the majority of EU member states will be adopting the new ratings - with the exception of Germany, which will retain its current Government-imposed rating system. Finland and Portugal will not adopt the scheme at its launch, but are expected to come on board later.
