MSN 8 Asks Users to Pay for Some Online Services
Time: 16:00 EST/21:00 GMT | News Source: Gartner | Posted By: Byron Hinson

Microsoft's decision to move MSN to a partial for-pay model reasonably extends the trend in which content and application providers seek financial legitimacy by countering the popular mid-1990s assertion that information ("content" is the more common term in 2002) "wants to be free." The precipitous decline in competition among Internet information and interaction hubs makes the for-pay business model more defensible than ever — the critical issue here.

Here's an ontopic post, what does MSN 8 offer? I saw a flash movie a little while ago, but I can't seem to find the link now. What are the new free things and what are the new for pay things?

--------------
The majority of existing services would be the same as those available for free from MSN.com. "But there will be a number of services that will be available exclusively for MSN 8 subscribers," Gurry said.

For example, MSN Money will come with a free online bill-pay service "and many other money features only available with the Money packaged product," she continued. Nonsubscribers would pay $6 a month for the bill-pay service.

MSN 8 subscribers also will be able to access an additional Encarta Encyclopedia service that other people would pay $10 a month for. As another information bonus, the MSN start page will come with more customizable information options than the one accessed through MSN.com. There will be about 150 content options.

Another content-oriented feature is the MSN Dashboard, which offers quick, regularly used information such as MSN Messenger contacts or favorite news sites. Dashboard, which can be docked on the Windows task bar for access when using other applications, updates content dynamically.

Microsoft also will include some technologies found in Picture It, the company's desktop digital photo software, in MSN 8.

"Those are all areas we know consumers want to do more of on the Web," Gurry said. "They want to manage their finances, access online research, and share their photos."

In addition, MSN Carpoint will offer special car repair location services as part of MSN 8.

I'm not sure what the MSN Money thing has to do with MSN 8. I've never been too clear on the integration of the desktop software product and the web portion. I've seen the Money 2002 and it is a really slick product. It has a bill pay service that can be accessed via the software. If you subscribe to MSN 8, then this service is free? Can you use this service (assuming you subscribe) if you don't also own Microsoft Money? This is the part I'm not too clear on. Also, how does Money know that you've paid. You log into Money via Passport. Am I to assume that the MSN 8 subscription will be bound to passport also and that it must be bound to the same passport as your specific Money file is?

Ah, that was exactly the link I was looking for (but not finding), n4cer.

Thanks for the info TW. Depending on the differences between standard and premium, MSN Bill Pay could be a major reason that I'd look into subscribing to MSN 8. I am not into the MSN Explorer, so if I were bound to that, I have real issues. I could see myself perhaps using the service from regular old IE (or within Money). Hmm.

Thanks for the comment JWM! We're getting ever closer to our goal. I worked on one once too, but I wouldn't claim it.

So, um, what language(s) did you code your bill pay in? Let's have an architecture chat.

I've been thinking about doing bill pay since i got money 2002. If i get other nifty stuff in msn 8, it might be worth it do me to get it. Then again, in the last year, almost every one of the bills i pay has offered an auto eft option, so i don't have to worry about bill paying for the most part anyway. I'll have to check it out once it gets out of beta and see how i feel about it.

Classic Windows DNA. Sweet! You in the USA? If so it's an interesting time to be working, I'd say. Of course, I'm still up, so what am I talking about.

Bob, if you can hang with watching multiple threads, and you know something about NT vs. *nix, I could probably use your help in this thread http://www.activewin.com/awin/comments.asp?ThreadIndex=12397&Group=Last
:-)

Bring it over here, we are getting close to the record.

lol. I'll try. :-)

My guess is that IE 7 will ship with Longhorn. If there is an interim OS as some have suggested, then perhaps it will ship with that. Other than IE 5 (and arguably this was part of either 98SE or Windows2000) no other IE in the last 4 years has not shipped with an OS.

I don't drink, otherwise I would.

Oh, about MSN 8, some folks say there are free features others that you have to pay for everything. I guess we'll see when it goes gold. I think the release is only a few weeks away.

#95 By 2459 (24.233.39.98) at 9/23/2002 4:02:04 AM
Managed IE would be cool. If they implement tabs, I hope it's like in VS.NET.

#96 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/23/2002 4:03:04 AM
That's funny. I think the single worst feature of VS.NET is tabs.

#97 By 2459 (24.233.39.98) at 9/23/2002 4:04:43 AM
How else can you handle all the code pages? MS Office style (A taskbar for each document)?

#98 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/23/2002 4:04:48 AM
In fact, whenever I see people say that the one great feature that Moz or Opera has that IE lacks is tabbed browsing. I almost swear every time I see that. As long as tabs can be turned off, I'd be OK with them.

I like the tabbed interface of XML Spy. The tabs in VS.NET really bug me. I like being able to move my windows around to my whim and over lapping and stuff.

#99 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 9/23/2002 4:06:42 AM
Well for one thing, in a project that has more than about 10 files, I navigate using either the class browser or the solution explorer. I don't get to the file I'm looking for by looking at the tab titles. Also, if you could view your file in a not always maximized state, (like in XML Spy) it'd be a lot better.

Never tried XML Spy. Will have to check it out.
Oh yeah, 600 posts Bob. You compete with blue, so I'll compete with you :-)
Not likely to catch you or blue anytime soon, though.
