In an 11 July, 2013 memo to Microsoft employees, Steve Ballmer announces a "far-reaching realignment of the company that will enable us to innovate with greater speed, efficiency and capability in a fast changing world." In a few words: Microsoft will switch from a divisional to a functional organisation; from what has often been labeled as silos – or even warring fiefdoms – to a set of functional groups aligned to execute the company's new "devices and services" strategy. Inevitably, several observers have called this new structure Apple-like, that it's a clone of the model developed and ferociously enforced by Steve Jobs, and now shepherded by Tim Cook.
