LOS ANGELES -- Microsoft Corp., looking to expand the market for computing and its own software, encouraged hardware makers Tuesday to think well beyond the traditional desktop PC as they work on future products. Bill Gates, opening the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference, showed products and conceptual designs including a PC shaped like a light bulb, and an office phone with a screen for finding contacts and placing calls. The Microsoft chairman also stressed the growing role of mobile phones as computing devices. | ||
