This is actually pretty neat! "The original WAV audio file used in the Xylophone.wav demo is a standard test file used by the MPEG committee for testing the performance of audio codecs." This comparison demo uses the original WAV file in a technique called Waveform Subtraction to look at the differences between an original and a compressed file and to see exactly what gets lost during the compression process. During the process of encoding and decoding, and recording the audio back to uncompressed WAV files, you will end up with a small amount of offset in the resulting audio file. To compensate for this, we used Cool Edit 2000 to line up the audio samples, and subtracted the encoded waveform from the original WAV file to create the difference file. | ||
