CDRLabs.com is reporting that Plextor Japan has released a new beta firmware for the PX-716 series of drives. According to their website, firmware v1.04c adds support for 2x DVD-R DL writing speeds. Unfortunately, as this is a beta, there is a catch. Features like VariRec, GigaRec and SecuRec are disabled in this firmware. Please keep this in mind before flashing your drive. As it is, unless you have DVD-R DL media, you might want to wait until January when the final firmware will be released.
