There is a great guide on "Flashing the Pioneer DVR-A05 & DVR-105" over in The Firmware Page Forums, with links to hacked firmware that removes region coding on the drive, as well as ups the write speed (from 1x to 2x) on Ritek's inexpensive but reliable G03 media.
