Microsoft Fends Off Hackers, Java Devotees and Sonic the Hedgehog | |

If it isn't one thing, it's another, when you're the world's largest software company. One day you misconfigure a router and no one can visit your Web sites, the next day hackers take down all your sites again. At least that's the story Microsoft is telling on its Web site (which is up at press time) and to the media. Some in the press are more skeptical, and that includes Microsoft-funded MSNBC, which saw some downtime as well. MSNBC quoted security expert Joel de la Garza: "Microsoft probably didn't know what happened to them Wednesday. I would assume they are both denial-of-service attacks, and they misdiagnosed (the first one)." CNET offered comprehensive coverage of the outages, looking at how different communities of Microsoft site visitors were affected and posting a curious piece about how the Redmond giant was halting the download of its Web browser software without indicating why.
