When Microsoft's online magazine, Slate, admitted last week that it had been tricked by a contributor using a manufactured identity, the incident highlighted the unique difficulty in sorting truth from fiction in the age of the Internet. At its inception, the Internet was heralded as a breakthrough medium whose vast potential to spread knowledge would provide a cure-all for human blights ranging from war to famine to authoritarianism.
